As many of you already know massage therapy has been used for hundreds for years and is beneficial for all ages and stages in life. Many studies have found massage therapy promotes body awareness, increases circulation , decreases sympathetic and increases parasympathetic thereby reducing stress hormones and increasing relaxation. The results are the same for infants. Symptoms such as colic, constipation, breathing and nasal congestion, difficulties sleeping and fussiness can easily be alleviated with massage therapy. Creating a routine before bed time with bath and massage can also help form a closer bond between baby.
The treatments usually range between 15-30 minutes depending on how baby is feeling. It's important to introduce baby to your touch slowly, having broad pressure rather than specifically one are is usually better tolerated. Speaking softly to baby can help create trust and reassurance. Pay attention to baby's cues, likes or dislikes for any particular technique. I usually incorporate a little bit of stretching as well. Make it fun! Remember they are infants with a limited attention span, singing or telling a story while treating them can help hold their attention and make the treatment more enjoyable.
